Lesson 3: Project Introduction and Research
Materials to Download
Opening Activity
- Introduce the Native American Musician Profile Slideshow Project and hand out the assignment sheet.
- Introduce students to the Speak/Sing Native Archive. Show them how to search for an artist and how the entries are organized.
- Assign pairs or trios and give them time to do a brief, initial dive into the archive. Assign or allow students to choose their artist.
Note: Depending on your preference and the dynamics of your classroom, you may wish to assign artists or to allow students to choose an artist.
Independent Work Time
- Allow student pairs/trios to research their chosen artist and begin planning their slideshow. Tell them that they need to have written answers for each slide by the end of today’s class and that they will have the next class to create the actual slides.
- Circulate through the class to keep students on task and to help them if they are struggling.
Lesson Closure
- Ask students to report out what questions they have been able to answer so far.
- Remind them that they will finish their slideshows during the next class period.
