Lesson Overview
In this lesson students will be exposed to some of the most impactful social movements that native Americans have started and been involved with during the 1960s and 1970s. They will have the opportunity to research a given social protest movement from this time period and summarize it for their fellow classmates. Additionally, they will understand how music fit into these protest movements.
20th Century Protests
√ Distribute Thinking Organizer #1
Divide class into five groups. Assign each group one of the 20th century protests and give them 20 minutes to do some initial research.
- American Indian Movement
- Occupation of Alcatraz
- Wounded Knee Occupation
- Longest Walk
- Trail of Broken Treaties
Ask them to fill in their portion of Thinking Organizer #1 as they conduct their research.
Then, have each group share a brief summary with the rest of the class. The class should fill in their thinking organizer as the other groups share.
Lesson Closure
As time allows, play music from the list below that all deal with 1960s and 1970s Native American activism and ask students to identify which movement is associated with each song.
